The History of the Ram Truck
It’s impossible to talk about Ram without acknowledging its ties to Dodge; those ties date back decades before the two brands split in 2010. So, how far back do we have to go to uncover Ram’s origins? It requires travelling back to the late 1800s when brothers Horace and John Dodge took their passion for inventing to Detroit. Skilled machinists and passionate inventors, the Dodge Brothers first opened up a bicycle shop in Windsor, Ontario, but soon moved across the river to open a machine shop in Detroit.
Their work quickly caught the attention of Oldsmobile, Ford, and other automobile manufacturers, making them a leading parts supplier in the young automotive industry. Eventually, the Dodge Brothers began producing automobiles of their own, but their deaths in 1920 forced the company into disrepair, ultimately landing in the hands of Walter P. Chrysler.
The Chrysler story is well-known as Walter had already proven his savviness at the helm of Buick and the Willys-Overland Motor Company. Like the Dodge brothers, Chrysler also wanted his own company and purchased the failing Maxwell Motor Company and its Canadian counterpart, immediately setting his sights on expansion. That expansion came with the acquisition of Plymouth, DeSoto, and the Dodge Brothers.
Fast forward several decades and Dodge was well-established under the Chrysler umbrella, earning its reputation for building reliable trucks and well-equipped vans. Then, in the 1980s, Dodge turned heads once again with the addition of the Ram hood ornament on its newest lineup. This marked the first generation of the Ram truck, launching Dodge to widespread popularity and forever linking it to the Ram name––or so everyone thought.
Dodge and Ram were synonymous for decades, designating some of the most capable trucks in the industry. Then, in 2010, the brands announced their split, leaving Dodge Ram fans in a tailspin.
