Jeep's Heroic History
With the powerful slogan of "Go Anywhere. Do Anything." it is to be expected that Jeep made a grand debut that was noble, heroic, and influential at a time when the world was in despair. Although the Jeep brand didn't officially appear until 1943, the original Jeep was introduced to the world by Willys-Overland as the Willys MB. It entered production in 1941 for the United States military when it seemed inevitable that they would be involved in World War II. These Jeeps were durable and versatile, allowing them to be used for many purposes during the war. From combat use to ambulances, Jeeps were the primary light 4x4 vehicle for the Allies during the war and after. Their popularity led to the obsoletion of other forms of transportation for the military, but to the soldiers they served, Jeeps were more than just a means of transportation.
Beyond being purposeful vehicles during World War II and afterward, soldiers forged bonds with their Jeeps. The "can-do" ability, strength, and agility Jeeps had to carry them through it all, taking them anywhere and allowing them to do everything, even beyond what they were designed to handle, resonated with the spirits of the soldiers. The Jeep was among the greatest contributions the US made to the war efforts, and Jeeps became war heroes. One MB was even sent home after being awarded the Purple Heart.
Civilian-use Jeeps, which were first introduced in 1945 with the CJ-2A, were no less of heroes to their drivers than the military counterparts were to the soldiers. Put to use on the farm, these rugged Jeeps could handle a full day's work of two draft horses without overheating. Many farmers who bought the CJ-2A didn't have a tractor or any other vehicle, which made the Jeep a much appreciated and useful tool to those it served.
Fast forward to the modern-day, and you'll find that Jeep drivers still appreciate and honour their Jeeps as more than just a vehicle. Sure, they remain a purposeful tool capable of many things, but Jeeps also remain a driver's best friend, standing by their sides through it all for as long and as far as their drivers need them to go. From family road trips to venturing off-road, you can trust Jeeps to provide you with exhilarating experiences on your journey toward your future and your dreams.
Popular Used Jeep Models
Since the 1940s, Jeep has given the world many models to appreciate. While some have been discontinued, like the CJ, there are many models that have lasted through the years, including the Wrangler and Cherokee, and even some that have come back from the dead, like the Gladiator. When you're looking for a used Jeep, it's good to have an understanding of where the roots of some of the models began and what they currently have to offer to see if they're a good fit for you. As your used Jeep dealer, we have put together a brief overview of a few of the top Jeep models to buy used to make the selection process a little easier.
Jeep Wrangler: 1987 to Present
The Jeep Wrangler may not have been introduced until the 1987 model year. However, its roots date back to World War II, with the Willys MB. Its appearance, 4x4 capabilities, and overall durability and versatility all resemble those of the original Jeep. Today, the Wrangler is known as an off-road warrior, but the original Wrangler YJ focused on improving road performance for a safer and more civilized driving experience than original MB. However, that's not to say the Wrangler isn't capable.
The modern-day Wrangler offers some extreme off-road options, like the Wrangler Rubicon Xtreme Recon package equipped with factory 35-inch tires and an impressive 100:1 crawl ratio. Both the Wrangler TJ generation, which began in 2007, and the current Wrangler JL generation, which started in 2018, are family-friendly in the four-door variations, but they are much more appealing for off-road and outdoor use than just transporting the family around.
Jeep Cherokee: 1974 to Present
For a family vehicle or just a commuter-focused model, the Jeep Cherokee is a good option. The first-generation Cherokee SJ was a body-on-frame SUV based on the Wagoneer. However, The Cherokee XJ, which was introduced for the 1984 model year, was one of the first modern compact SUVs. Come 2014, the fifth-generation Cherokee KL transformed once again, only this time into a compact crossover SUV with more impressive fuel efficiency and accommodations for comfort and convenience than previously.
Jeep Grand Cherokee: 1993 to Present
The Jeep Grand Cherokee was introduced as a luxury version of the beloved Cherokee in 1993 and has remained a popular choice for drivers looking for a versatile SUV with a spacious, accommodating interior. Since its beginning, the Grand Cherokee has remained a midsize, premium SUV on a unibody chassis for a smoother ride. For the 2021 model year, the Grand Cherokee became more glorious than ever with the first three-row Grand Cherokee L, making it even more appealing for those in need of more seats for passengers or more interior cargo room.
Jeep Compass: 2007 to Present
Another compact crossover, the Jeep Compass is very similar in size to the Cherokee but is a bit more affordable and efficient. Although their appearances also closely resemble each other, the Compass does have more curvature to it. This makes it appear more modern and fresh than its slightly larger sibling.
When the Jeep Compass entered the lineup in 2007, unlike other Jeep models, it was not deemed "Trail Rated." However, since the 2011 model year, the Compass has been available with off-road packages and the Trail Rated badge. But even with more advanced off-road capabilities, the Compass remains a favoured model of first-time Jeep buyers rather than off-roaders. With a Compass, you can enjoy the experience of versatility and trust that Jeep is known for without breaking the bank. This Jeep is great for drivers looking for a daily driver.
Jeep Gladiator: 2020 to Present
The first Jeep Gladiator truck, known as the Gladiator SJ, was designed for civilian use in the 1960s. However, like the original Willys Jeep, Gladiators also became war heroes. The two-door, full-size Gladiator was adapted into a military pickup for the US Army just a few years after its introduction in 1963. In fact, a version of this iconic truck is still in production for the Korean military today!
After being discontinued decades ago, the Jeep Gladiator was reborn for the 2020 model year as a four-door, five-seater, midsize pickup with a style similar to that of the Wrangler, with removable doors and several roof options which can also be removed. It is actually the first in its class to offer a convertible folding soft top. And with a windshield that can be lowered like the Wrangler's, you can open up the cabin of your truck to enhance your outdoor adventures even more.
The Jeep Gladiator shares its powertrain options with the Wrangler and comes standard with four-wheel drive. Although the Gladiator is built for off-road excursions straight from the dealership, especially with the Rubicon version, it is also designed to handle work tasks with a truck bed, towing capability, and a unique flat rear load floor for hauling cargo in the backseat when the bed isn't sufficient. The versatility of the Jeep Gladiator is quite impressive and makes it a great option for just about any driver who wants to venture both on and off the pavement.
