The Dodge Story
Did you know that Dodge has strong ties to Canada? Brothers Horace and John Dodge were born in Michigan in the 1860s. With only a few years between them, the brothers were incredibly close and spent their childhood working in the family's machine shop in Niles. However, the family's struggling business prompted the Dodges, where the boys were hired at the Canadian Typography Company in Windsor, Ontario.
Known collectively as "the Dodge Brothers," Horace and John were irreplaceable machinists and fabricators. In their spare time, they were also passionate inventors. They spent their evenings tinkering, eventually opening a bicycle business in Windsor in 1897. Their invention of a dirt-resistant ball bearing added to their success, eventually earning them enough royalties to start a machine shop in Detroit. It was here that they began producing railroad equipment and designed a horseless carriage before Ransom Olds of Oldsmobile tasked the brothers with building transmissions for his cars.
The Dodge Brothers built thousands of transmissions for Oldsmobile, quickly becoming one of the largest automotive parts suppliers in the region. This success caught the attention of Henry Ford, who contracted the brothers to begin building engines. As their reputation grew, Horace and John set their sights on expansion, building a larger plant in 1910 and hiring 5,000 workers. Within four years, they entered the automotive business themselves with the debut of their first automobile.
Thanks to the Dodge brothers' reputation, their first automobile was a massive success and made them the third best-selling brand behind Ford and General Motors. By 1917, the model made its way to Canada, prompting another wave of success that would make the brothers' death in 1920 even more tragic. With the brothers gone, their wives sold the company for $146 million to Dillon Read & Company, which was unable to continue the brothers' success. Nearly bankrupt by 1928, the Dodge Brothers was back on the market; however, the timing was finally perfect as Walter P. Chrysler, a man with his own Canadian ties, purchased the company and forever changed its trajectory.
