Chrysler's Storied Past
Although the Chrysler Corporation of Canada opened its doors in 1925, the company's ties to Canada began decades before with Walter Chrysler's great-great-grandfather, who settled in present-day Chatham, Ontario. Walter's ties to Canada later benefited from his pioneering spirit in the automotive industry. He spent his early years with Buick and Willys-Overland before deciding to launch a brand of his own. Then, he set his sights on the Maxwell Motor Company and its Canadian sibling.
Chrysler took over the Maxwell-Chalmers Motor Company of Canada, establishing the Chrysler Corporation of Canada in 1925. With the acquisition, the company gained a 5,700 square metre production facility, where 181 employees produced 4,500 Chryslers in its first year. In the years following, expansion continued as Chrysler added the Plymouth, DeSoto, Dodge, and Graham brands to its lineup and built a 26,000 square metre facility outside of Windsor. By 1931, Chrysler's efforts paid off with the debut of the first Canadian Dodge truck.
Chrysler lent its hand to the war efforts in the 1940s and returned to normal operations in the 1950s and 1960s, building V8 engines at its Windsor plant and looking for additional ways to expand. By the 1970s, Chrysler Canada produced the Chrysler Cordoba, Dodge Charger, and Dodge B Series Vans and Wagons before ending passenger car production after five decades in the early 1980s. However, this ending brought a new beginning––the production of Chrysler's revolutionary minivans.
In the late 1990s, Chrysler became DaimlerChrysler Canada and made a $500 million investment in automotive research and development––the largest investment in Canadian history. However, the partnership between Chrysler and Daimler was short-lived, ending in 2009 just after the return of the Dodge Challenger. Years later, Chrysler entered another partnership to become FCA Canada, which led to Chrysler being positioned alongside Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat and Alfa Romeo. In 2021, the FCA and PSA groups merged to create Stellantis Canada.
