Although the Jeep Grand Cherokee was first released for the 1993 model year, its development goes back much further than that. While its roots can tenuously be traced all the way back to the original Willys Jeep, initial development on the Grand Cherokee began in the early 1980s. In 1983, American Motors Corporation (AMC), which owned the Jeep brand at the time, began working on a successor to follow the popular Jeep Cherokee. However, as development progressed, the Grand Cherokee slowly became a larger and more luxurious complement to the standard Cherokee rather than a replacement.
Development of the new vehicle continued throughout the 1980s, and when Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it continued the project. In fact, the Grand Cherokee became the first new Jeep released under Chrysler ownership––some at Chrysler wanted to get it on the road before the end of the decade, but it was ultimately delayed due to a larger focus on redesigning Chrysler’s minivans. As development continued, Ford released its Explorer model, creating new competition, but Jeep was in a position to learn from what Ford had done.
One thing that set the Grand Cherokee apart when it was released for the 1993 model year was that it featured a unibody design like a car rather than truck-like body-on-frame engineering. This made the Grand Cherokee a crossover rather than a conventional SUV and provided it with superior handling compared to similarly-sized models that featured a body-on-frame design. When the Grand Cherokee was revealed as a new, larger option to go with the Cherokee, it made immediate headlines and proved incredibly popular, becoming a major part of Chrysler’s success in the 1990s.
The first generation of the Grand Cherokee ran through 1998; it was followed by a second generation that included a full redesign and a new full-time 4x4 system called Quadra-Trac II. A third generation of the Grand Cherokee was released for the 2005 model year with more powerful HEMI V8 engines that improved performance, plus it replaced the previous live-axle front suspension with a double-wishbone designed to create a more comfortable ride. There was a refresh and facelift for this generation for the 2008 model year that introduced more luxury features inside.
A fourth generation for the Grand Cherokee launched with the 2011 model year and proved to be the longest run for this model. For this generation, the vehicle was redesigned once again with more efficient engines, an improved independent rear suspension, an available air suspension, and advanced terrain and off-road systems. All of this came together to create an incredibly popular option that took its place at the top of many Best SUV lists when it was released. There were several major updates during the fourth generation, including a styling refresh for the 2014 model year. The latest fifth-generation model launched for 2022, joined by an available three-row Grand Cherokee L, and it continues to be the most impressive midsize SUV on the road.
