Walter Chrysler launched his professional career as a machinist and mechanic with the railroad in his native Kansas before entering the automotive industry in 1911. He was hired to run production for the Buick Motor Company, during which time he built an outstanding reputation by reducing production costs to yield higher profits for the company. Around 1916, General Motors founder William Durant stepped in to run the company, at which time Chrysler resigned. However, Durant refused to accept Chrysler's resignation and enticed him with a $120,000 USD salary and a $500,000 USD annual bonus for three years, which was unheard of at the time.
Accepting the offer, Chrysler ran Buick for the next three years before he resigned in 1919. Durant paid him $10 million USD for his stock in General Motors, making Chrysler one of the richest men in America. Chrysler had big plans for his wealth and spent the next few years running the Willys-Overland Motor Company before purchasing the failing Maxwell Motor Company, which he promptly renamed the Chrysler Corporation.
Within 11 days of launching the Chrysler Corporation in America, Walter turned his attention to Canada, a second home to the automotive pioneer whose great-great-grandfather settled in Chatham, Ontario. Just as he had in America, Walter took over the Maxwell-Chalmers Motor Company of Canada, a 5,667-square meter that he soon renamed the Chrysler Corporation of Canada. The factory quickly started producing the first Chrysler, a revolutionary vehicle with its high-compression six-cylinder engine and four-wheel hydraulic brakes.
The success of the first Chrysler and subsequent models led to the company's ongoing expansion. Walter's experience with General Motors played a crucial factor in this growth as he mirrored GM's hierarchy of brands and added Dodge, DeSoto, and Plymouth to the lineup.
