6 Used Dodge Models to Consider

A blue 2020 Dodge Journey is shown driving on a snowy path after leaving a used Dodge dealer.

And then there were three. As of 2021, Dodge decided to limit production to just three vehicles: the Durango three-row SUV and the Charger and Challenger sports cars. This means that you will have to go to a used Dodge dealer to find many of the models that were once produced by this venerable brand. The decision at Stellantis, the parent company for Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram, was that Chrysler would produce the conglomerate’s passenger vans going forward. This marked the end of the Dodge Grand Caravan. Similarly, Jeep would produce the two-row SUVs, so the Dodge Journey also came to an end.

Still, just because a vehicle is discontinued doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with it. Just like the decision to spin Dodge Ram trucks into the newly created Ram brand, these decisions were made so that each brand could focus on a particular type of vehicle, making the most of the expertise and know-how at each brand while also creating unique brand identities. This means that you can find some great deals on used Dodge models here at Londonderry CDJR. Whether it is an older version of one of the existing Dodge models or one that was recently discontinued, you know you will be getting a Dodge that is built strong and is able to handle whatever our Edmonton weather can dish out.

Discontinued Dodge Models

There are three recently discontinued Dodge models that are worth considering, depending on your personal lifestyle. Each has its own merits, making them worthwhile vehicles. While Dodge no longer produces these models, you can still find them on the used car market at affordable prices. Obviously, more recent models will have more of the new technological features that so many drivers crave, like active safety features and advanced infotainment systems that support multiple platforms. In addition, there are a number of different trim levels, allowing you to determine whether you want to pay a little extra for a model with more standard items.

#1 - Dodge Grand Caravan

Once upon a time, both Chrysler and Dodge made passenger vans that were among the most popular family vehicles, but the minivan has been supplanted over the last two decades by the SUV. As a result, Stellantis decided to discontinue the Dodge Grand Caravan after the 2020 model year, leaving Chrysler to continue to carry the banner. Nevertheless, the corporate decision shouldn’t affect your decision-making if you feel a minivan is the right choice for you and your family.

The Dodge Grand Caravan goes all the way back to 1987, and there have been five generations of this minivan. In its last few years, Dodge offered the Grand Caravan in a handful of different trim levels, ranging from the entry-level Canada Value Package to the top-tier GT trim. Options include power sliding doors and leather seats, bringing a level of luxury to this van. No matter the trim you choose from these newer used models, you get a van that comes equipped with a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission capable of producing an impressive 283 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The interior of the Grand Caravan provides seating for up to 8 passengers, with a maximum cargo capacity of 3,973 litres with the two rear rows of seats folded down. As you can clearly see, a used Dodge Grand Caravan makes an ideal family vehicle, especially for larger families.

#2 - Dodge Journey

Another option for a family vehicle is a used Dodge Journey. This midsize, three-row SUV was a mainstay of the Dodge lineup from its introduction in 2009 until it was discontinued in 2020. The Journey was always one of the most affordable models in its class and remains an excellent choice for a family on a budget. By the end, Dodge was offering the Journey in two trims, the base Canada Value Package and the luxury Crossroad. The latter features a leather interior, sunroof, and a Dodge Uconnect system with a 21 cm colour touchscreen, almost double the size of the screen in the Journey CVP.

The Dodge Journey was originally offered with a choice of a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 that produces 283 hp and a 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine that can generate 173 hp. Unfortunately, Dodge made the 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine standard for the 2020 model year, which did not provide as much power and acceleration as the V6 engine. While you will get better fuel economy with the smaller engine, it is not as much fun to drive as the Journey with the V6 engine.

#3 - Dodge Viper

It may not be the greatest choice for a family driver, but a used Dodge Viper is still an amazing supercar that was more affordable than its European cousins when it debuted in 1992. After 25 years of biting the competition, the Viper was finally axed in 2017. This rear-wheel drive coupe was given an incredibly powerful engine in its final generation, a ridiculously large 8.4-litre V10 combined with a 6-speed manual transmission. This delivers an insane 645 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque, making it seem capable of getting speeding tickets while stopped at a traffic light. It also drinks gasoline like water, making it not the best choice for someone on a budget. Still, if you have a need for speed, then a used Dodge Viper might be your cup of venom.

Used Current Dodge Models

Dodge has paired its model lineup down to a powerful trio of vehicles that could rival Rush back in the days of 2112 and Moving Pictures. Sadly, there will never be another Rush reunion with the passing of the great Neil Peart, but you can still get behind the wheel of one of these used models.

#4 - Dodge Durango

Named for a city in Colorado, the Dodge Durango is meant to evoke thoughts of the Wild West. Dodge premiered its three-row SUV in 1998 and has been producing the third-generation model since the 2011 model year. This SUV is bigger than most midsize rivals, with a roomier interior that can comfortably seat up to seven passengers. In fact, a used Durango will give you a spacious 2,410 litres of cargo space. Also, unlike its rivals, a used Durango gives you a choice of a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and a 5.7-litre HEMI V8. Whichever you choose, you will get plenty of power, with a staggering 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque if you opt for the HEMI V8. This is a far cry from the I-4 and V6 engines offered on most three-row SUVs from other automakers.

#5 - Dodge Charger

Muscle car enthusiasts were thrilled when Dodge brought back its popular Charger in 2006. This four-door sports sedan can seat up to five passengers comfortably. However, its selling point is its unrivalled performance. This is one fast sedan, especially if you find a used one with the 6.2-litre HEMI Hellcat supercharged V8 engine. Even if you choose one of the other V6 or V8 engine options on a used Charger, you are not going to be disappointed with the performance.

The only drawback is the fuel economy on the Charger, which is middling at best. Still, unlike other muscle cars, the Charger actually offers a comfortable backseat. While there is no way that a full-size adult will enjoy a long road trip in the backseat of a Ford Mustang or a Chevy Camaro, they are not going to be complaining in the Charger, which is quite roomy and comfortable with over 100 cm of second-row legroom.

#6 - Dodge Challenger

The Charger’s two-door cousin, the Dodge Challenger, was re-introduced in 2008, two years after the Charger. This muscle car has the long hood line and wide stance of the original Challengers produced by Dodge back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The key difference is that it has modern features like the Dodge Uconnect infotainment system, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and even available all-wheel drive.

Despite being a coupe, the Challenger offers a fairly roomy backseat, allowing you to fit up to five passengers. Still, the key to this coupe is its choice of powerful engines, including a ridiculously strong 6.2-litre HEMI SRT supercharged high-output V8 available on used SRT Hellcat Redeye models. This will give you 797 hp and 707 lb-ft of torque, allowing you to go from 0 to infinity and beyond in the blink of an eye.
